The Christmas season provides many wonderful opportunities to teach the biblical view of material things.
· The Christmas Story itself is a revelation of what God values. Jesus was born to peasant parents, not in a palace.
· God gave Himself, not silver or gold. The greatest gift we can give is ourselves.
· Wise Men brought gifts to Him.
· The greatest event is history was witnessed by simple folk, shepherds.
In our churches, this season offers opportunities to demonstrate God’s love through the Christmas Offering for World Missions. And there are many other organized projects such as Franklin Graham’s Samaritan’s Purse Shoe Box Christmas Project. (see www. Samaritanpurse.org).
Or help some of the hundreds of seamen that come to our ports along the Delaware River from around the world. Seamen’s Minister George Ratz collects personal items for Christmas “Diddy” bags each year. Tooth brushes, razors, soaps, deodorants, gloves mittens, etc. Contact George at: 610-825-5260.
Your Associational Missionary (DOM) usually has numerous requests at this time of the year.
Or you may set up a program in your own church. When I was a pastor in Connecticut, we had a “Mitten Tree” to collect toys, gloves and mittens for the children of the state prison.
With all of the talk of “Black Friday,” did you see the guy on several TV shows who advocated a “Buy Nothing At All Day”? I don’t believe God wants us to “curse the tensile.” There are times for anointing with expensive ointment. But followers of the Son of Man should not encourage the substitution of materialism for true spiritual wealth.
